The relationship between literature and cinema is forged from the very moment of the appearance of cinema.

Two narrative forms that share their intention to tell stories, one through words, the other also using images. Cinema has received characters, stories, plots, forms and styles from literature and, in turn, exerts an aesthetic influence on contemporary literary works, with respect to the traditional concept of literature.

To celebrate Book Day on 23 April, the Foundation is dedicating this month's two screenings to the symbiotic relationship between cinema and literature.

Tuesday, 18 April, 20.30 h.

Fatima, the unforgettable sultana. Mohamed Abderrahman Tazi. Morocco, 2021.

Born in Fez in 1940, Fatima Mernissi studied at one of Morocco's first coeducational public schools and went on to study law in Rabat. In France, she won a scholarship to the Sorbonne and in the United States, in 1974, she obtained a doctorate in sociology at the American University of Brandeis.

Later to become a sociology professor in Rabat and a human rights activist, the Moroccan sociologist was, from the 1980s onwards, at the origin of the creation of women's associations fighting for their social, professional and creative recognition. Calling for multidisciplinarity and action in the field, until her last moments she led working groups and writing workshops to think about the future.
