‘The living memory of the Sephardic Tangiers’ colloquium and Sephardic Bridges concert

03/10/2019 From 19:30

The Fundación Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo (Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation) and Be Sepharad-Legado Sefardí organise an encounter on the memory and Sephardic legacy of the city of Tangiers.

Pepa Rull, founder of Be Sepharad-Legado Sefardí, in conversation with Rachel Muyal, Sephardic woman, witness and protagonist of intellectual life in 20th century Tangiers, introduce us to the past and present of the Sepharads of Tangiers, their culture and their legacy.

The talk revolves around Rachel Muyal’s experience as the protagonist of the documentary ‘Your mouth in the skies’ which will bring to light the reality of the Sephardic Jews of the Maghreb, as she reads a marvellous letter she wrote to the Catholic Kings more than 500 years after the 1492 Edict of Expulsion of the Jews.

The event will end with a performance of songs of the Sephardic Jews and the Maghreb by the group ‘Sephardic Bridges’. Musicians have come from Tetuan, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera for the occasion, joining the voices of Imán Kandoussi and Pepa Rull.

Arabic lute: Fahd Ben Kirán (Tetuan)

Arabic lute, baglama and other instruments: Juan Manuel Rubio (Jerez de la Frontera-Seville)
