Tres Culturas and CEAR honour the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination

21/03/2019 From 12:00

The 21st of March is the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination, the annual date for which was set by the General Assembly of the United Nations. To honour the occasion, the Fundación Tres Culturas (Three Cultures Foundation) and CEAR, the Spanish Commission for Assistance to Refugees, are jointly organising an activity for education centres.

Following a visit to the Foundation’s headquarters, there will be a screening of short films Vallas (Fences), by Ousmanou Biaback Anonog, y Que te pillen bailando (Let them catch you dancing), with script by Josemari Martínez for Ana del Arco and Francisco Tejero. Following the screening there will be a debate on the blight of racism in today’s society.

Nobody has the right to humiliate anyone. To humiliate them for the colour of their skin, for their language or for their accent, or for their place of birth, lifestyle, origins or traditions. And certainly not for their poverty or helplessness that forces them to seek shelter among us, either. The most hated race of all, the most persecuted and discriminated against, is that of the poor… There are many cultural identities, but the only civilised identity that really matters is human identity. The thing that makes us human is human treatment. Living in a civilised way is coexisting with those who are different to us. We should tell the children this before it’s too late.

Fernando Savater. Prologue to Tahar Ben Jelloun’s book Dad, what is racism?
