Following Moroccan artist Hamza El Fasiki’s residence in in Cornwall, UK, the CARPET project is receiving British artist OVERLAP in Seville.
OVERLAP is British Contemporary Art graduate Melanie Johns’ artistic name. She has for some time been living and working in Cornwall, where she arrived thanks to the Krowji Graduate Studio Award. Following her residence in the south of England she decided to stay in Cornwall and establish her own workplace there.
OVERLAP bases her work on actions in which she involves other people for their creation, with particular interest in day-to-day activities. Her work is very much related to the environment and sustainability, with drawing as her study base. She routinely develops practises in collaboration with different citizens’ groups. In her creative process she enjoys using different tools and means, especially etching, drawing and different types of fabrics with which she creates three-dimensional work with multiple forms.
During her stay in Seville, in the month of February, she will have the opportunity to begin a personal artistic project, develop a joint creation and meet different citizens’ groups though workshops focused on geometry using basic materials such as paper.
OVERLAP will share a studio with Sevillian artist Armando Rabadán, who will be in residence in Cornwall in May within the framework of the CARPET project.
The CARPET project is coordinated by the Fundación Tres Culturas (Three Cultures Foundation) together with Creative Kernow in England, CEARTE in Portugal and APDN in Morocco. This project has financial support from the European Europa Creativa programme.
