The Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation, the Embassy of Israel in Spain and Sefarad-Israel Centre will analyze, guided by Professor Michel Abitbol, historian and professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the departure of the Jews from Arab countries in the second half of the 20th century.
About a million of these expelled Jews arrived as refugees to the newly created state of Israel, which had to make an enormous effort of economic and social integration. Today, the descendants of these communities represent 50% of the population of Israel and that is why the Knesset (Israeli parliament) approved on 26 June a national law that protects the commemoration of ‘Refugee Day Jews’.
After the opening lecture by Professor Abitbol, the roundtable will feature political scientist, writer and historian José Antonio Lisbona and writer Verónica Nehama. To close the ceremony, a tasting of typical dishes from the Judeo-Moroccan cuisine will be served.
