The Three Cultures foundation has scheduled for November 20th, International Children’s Rights Day, two performances (at 10 a.m. and 12 noon) of the shadow-theatre play The Sultan’s Banquet by the Soldenoche theatre company.
In this extraordinary story the sultan uses a riddle to urge the guests to find a way to overcome hunger and frustration. After the performance, the shadow-puppeteer asks the children in the audience to try to resolve the matter by using real spoons with very long handles. It’s a challenge that’s continually repeated.
The company thus aims for the audience members themselves to embody for a moment the guests at the banquet. After a few moments in doubt, they are given a choice: to share and assume the challenges collectively.
The show is meant for children age 8 or older. It premiered at the 37th Seville International Puppet Fair on May 27th, 2017.
This theatre company was founded in 2006 by Fernanda Cáceres and Damiana Puglia Padilla, who put on performances using shadow theatre as a teaching tool in educative and social environments. Since 2011 they have worked with the Federation of Extremadura Gypsy Associations, conducting workshops with Gypsy students. They also organise theatre workshops on the subject of gender, together with associations of women in the rural environment and groups at risk of social exclusion.
The two performances will take place on Monday, November 20th at 10 a.m. and 12 noon. The activity lasts for one hour.
For students 8 to 13 years old.
