Arto Tun\u00e7boyaciyan, a percussionist and singer of Armenian descent with Anatolian roots, began his career at the age of 11, performing and recording traditional music with his brother Onno, establishing himself as a traditional musician throughout Turkey and Europe. <\/p>\n
In 1981 Arto moved to the United States to explore new creative influences and add a new dimension to his own vision of life. Since then, he has given solo concerts of his own music all over the world. In 1985 two solo albums were released on the Dutch Keytone label: Virginland and Main Root. <\/p>\n
He started a meaningful cooperation with the Armenian lute player Ara Dinkjian, with whom he recorded a duo Tears of Dignity and Onno for the Greek label Libra Music. Two wonderful albums in which the music \"has the sound of my life\" to use Arto's words. <\/p>\n
Onno is a tribute to his brother Onno Ohannes Tun\u00e7boyaciyan who died unexpectedly in 1996, and whose compositions are a clear expression of Arto's memories of his brother when he was alive and after his death. <\/p>\n
With Ara Dinkjiam he also founded the group Night Ark and recorded the following albums: Picture, Moments, Wonderland and Petals On Your Path (released in February 2000 by Universal Music). In 1998 he participated in the Italian project Triboh, conceived and co-directed with vocalist Maria Pia De Vito and pianist Rita Marcotulli, recording the CD Triboh for the Italian label Polosud.<\/p>\n
He is a member of the Walking Fish group with Matthew Garrison, Jim Beard, Gene Lake and Bob Malach. <\/p>\n
His album with Paul Winter, Every Day is a New Life, was released by Living Music in 2000. <\/p>\n
He is currently working with Armenian musicians with whom he founded his new group The Armenian Navy Band, a small orchestra rooted in the traditional music of Armenia and Anatolia with the inspiration and sound of today. The project was born in 1998 after a meeting in Yerevan with young Armenian musicians coming from different musical backgrounds (ethnic and contemporary Armenian music). <\/p>\n
Since then, the idea of creating a group that could represent the sound of today's Armenia took shape. <\/p>\n
The two albums that represent the current aspect of Arto's musical research are Avci, a soundtrack for a film composed by the artist, and Bzidik Zinvor. Bzidik Zinvor was recorded in Armenia and is the result of the first meeting with several musicians from Yerevan. Arto's original compositions express the sound of past generations together with today's life: this is what he calls \"avantgarde folk\". <\/p>\n
