The idea of medieval Spain as a place of coexistence of the religions mentioned in the book - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - has endured until today, becoming a powerful symbol of the country's history beyond its borders. The persistence of this image is demonstrated by the vitality of the debate on the possible myths and stereotypes surrounding the very concept of coexistence and by the proliferation of research and articles that attempt to establish a more accurate approximation of the historical context. Beyond the undeniable interest of this debate, the patrimonial, architectural, cultural and linguistic reality of present-day Spain is undoubtedly the most obvious proof of the depth of the empire created by the Islamic and Jewish cultures in our country.<\/p>\n
However, knowledge of the history of these cultures often does not go beyond the academic spheres of universities, despite society's growing interest in the knowledge and understanding of this field. The positive reception of the cycle \"The Arts of Islamic Spain\" is proof of this. \"Heritage, transcendance, actuality\", which the Three Cultures Foundation organised during the first half of 2021 in order to make the variety and richness of Andalusian heritage known to a wide public, as well as the latest discoveries and debates on the subject.<\/p>\n
In view of the positive response to this initiative and in order to continue our work in the field of disseminating our historical past, Trois Cultures will devote the first half of the new year's al-Andalus series to the cycle \"The Jewish heritage in Spanish culture\". Although it is not possible to determine the origins of the presence of the Juifs in the Iberian Peninsula by means of archaeological or documentary vestiges, the specialists situate it even a few centuries before the Christian era, although it is not possible to wait for the establishment of al-Andalus and, above all, the 12th and 12th centuries, above all, the 12th and 13th centuries, for it to reach what has been defined as the zenith of Jewish cultural production in many regions, with the appearance of figures such as Salomon Ibn Gabirol or Hasday ibn Shaprut, considered classics throughout the Jewish world. The contribution of the great Jewish intellectuals and authors who lived in al-Andalus and in the post-Christian kingdoms has had an important impact both on Western European culture and on the rest of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
The cycle \"Jewish heritage in Spanish culture\" will cover different aspects of the Jewish heritage in our country, from the material heritage preserved in our museums to artistic and literary creation, passing through the contributions of Spanish-Jewish and Sephardic culture to science, philosophy and literature. Finally, the Sephardic cultural heritage in the Maghreb, with a particular focus on Morocco, and in Europe will be analysed.<\/p>\n
The cycle is aimed at the general public, as well as at a specialised audience, in order to serve as an introduction to a little-known area or as a starting point for more in-depth study.<\/p>\n
The cycle is composed of six lectures which will be given by some of the most prestigious specialists of the Jewish-Spanish and Sephardic culture of our country.<\/p>\n
The first session of the year, entitled \"Art, aesthetics and architecture: the Spanish-Jewish sphere\", will take place on Thursday 27 January 2022, at 19h00.<\/p>\n
The lecture will be given by Miguel \u00c1ngel Espinosa Villegas, professor of art history at the University of Grenada.<\/p>\n
