{"id":21804,"date":"2015-12-23T07:55:24","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T07:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tresculturas.org\/tresculturas\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=21804"},"modified":"2015-12-23T07:55:24","modified_gmt":"2015-12-23T07:55:24","slug":"mesa-actualidad-estado-islamico-necesario-fin-del-siglo-xx","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/tresculturas.org\/en\/actividad\/mesa-actualidad-estado-islamico-necesario-fin-del-siglo-xx\/","title":{"rendered":"Current affairs round table: 'The Islamic State and the necessary end of the 20th century'."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The emergence of the Islamic State is a problem that dates back to the 1980s, when the United States, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia set up the Islamic State (ISIS) in the late 1980s.\u00a0<em>mujahedin bridge<\/em>\u00a0to fight against Soviet troops in Afghanistan; the fall of the Berlin Wall left these 'holy warriors' (then accepted and armed by the West) orphaned, who, feeling betrayed, opted for a global armed struggle, thus giving rise to Al-Qaeda. Later, a further US mistake in forcing the invasion of Iraq would facilitate the mutation of Al-Qaeda into today's Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p>One of the objectives of this Roundtable will be to explain how the old interventionist policies of the 20th century shaped the Middle East into a strategic vision of the region that has become old and obsolete at the beginning of the current century due to key factors such as the Arab Spring and the nuclear agreement with Iran, which has changed the balance of power. On the other hand, we will analyse how the insistence on applying these old 20th century methods to solve a 21st century problem will lead to a new failure. In conclusion, we will explain why the Middle East of the future will be very different from the one we have known, with new borders, new governments, new societies and a new geopolitical relationship
