Talk by María Rubio Chaves.
Maria Chaves Rubio will begin her presentation by a short introduction to the Tunisian documentary before the revolution of 2011. After this, and as a result of the research developed in the city of Tunis, she will explain the main changes that are present in the documentaries made nowadays, after the Jasmine Revolution, which was the beginning of the worldwide known Arab Springtime. Democracy in Tunis has totally changed the topics chosen by filmmakers, who express through their works a new vision of the reality of the country, together with the dreams and fears of common citizens. It is definitely an open debate on the works that can be already seen in cinemas of Tunis that are in and outside the commercial distributions.
After the talk, the tunisien film ‘Jeudi Après-Midi’ will be projected.
María Chaves Rubio graduate in Arabic Language by the University of Seville shows a strong vocation towards the Arab world in itself. Her works have moved between the Arabic literature and its culture generally speaking, with a Master in Cultural management. Her first research is based on the Contemporary Arabic Literature in Spanish language that has been reinforced through different stages in Morocco, especially in the North of this country. As teacher of Spanish as a foreign language, she has been able to get closer to the society of the Maghreb and its citizens, which has contributed enormously to the enrichment of her research. She has experienced directly the beginning and development of the Arab Spring, while being a teacher and researcher in Tunis in 2011. This fact has caused a strong impact on her vision towards the society of Tunis and citizens from the Arab world in general. As a result of this experience, she is working on a thesis under the title of “The Tunisian Revolution through the movies 2011-2014”, a research developed in strong collaboration with the Department of Contemporary History at the University of Cadiz.
