The exhibition Wa Habibi (Oh, my love), organized by Casa Árabe and the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation and curated by María Santoyo, presents a selection of pictures taken between 2012 and 2015 during successive trips to Syria, the country the photographer was forced to leave.

None of these images reflect the bands, weapons, violence or exile. Nor do they aim to explain the causes of the conflict or take a political stand. These photos show with extraordinary sensitivity and deep respect for others just how far the human condition is changed by war. Carole Alfarah has witnessed the decomposition of a land she loves and nowadays finds hard to recognise. Her images convey an unbearable and nearby reality: we could be them, it could happen to us, it could be here.

Carole Alfarah

Since the start of her career Carole Alfarah (Damascus, 1981) has placed her camera at the service of silenced people and groups, offering them a voice and recognition via images. When the Syrian conflict broke out, she kept her interest focused on civil society, consciously avoiding the canonical objectivity, archetypes and iconography of war reporting.

Opening times: Mondays to Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; closed on weekends and holidays.
