The Fundación Tres Culturas -in collaboration with the Euro-Arab Foundation for Higher Studies- is organising the presentation of the book Afghanof Javier Ruiz Arevalo. Beautifully illustrated by the watercolours of the painter Concha Osuna, the book tries to make the reality of women's lives in this country understandable through history, culture and the testimonies of its own protagonists.
When we think of the women of Afghanistan, words such as discrimination, burqa, suffering come to mind... This sad reality forces us to ask difficult questions: why do Afghans treat their women this way, have Afghan women always suffered this situation, is it possible to change these habits to open up spaces of freedom and dignity for them or, on the contrary, must they resign themselves to accept the condemnation that has befallen them because of their place of birth?
Since his first mission in Afghanistan in 2006, Javier Ruiz Arévalo, a colonel in the General Corps of the Army, Doctor in Law and expert in Logistics, has specialised in the study of this country and the conflict it has been experiencing for decades. Afghan is the result of the confluence of two projects. One, literary, which the author uses to trace a fascinating journey through subjects as relevant as they are unknown, such as women in Afghan tradition; Afghan women throughout history; practices harmful to women or their survival strategies. Another, artistic, is about expressing feelings through painting. Both perspectives merge to provide a human dimension to a reality that is undoubtedly dramatic, but with which the aim is to pay tribute to these women, transcending the traditional darkness that surrounds them and with which they are represented, in the hope that "the day will come when Afghan women will finally be able to live the life they deserve".
The event, which will take place on Tuesday 6 June at 7.30 p.m. at the headquarters of the Fundación Tres Culturas, will be attended by the author, who will speak with Inmaculada Marrero RochaExecutive Secretary of the Euro-Arab Foundation.
