The Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry in Charge of Moroccans Residing Abroad, and within the framework of the Alqantara 2017 programme, is organising this intensive course on Andalusian music, given by the renowned musician Amin Chaachoo, director of the Tetouan-Asmir Centre for Musicological Research and the Conservation of Musical Heritage; director of the Al-Haiek Andalusian Orchestra and director of the Andalusian Orchestra of Malaga.
One of the objectives of this course is to show the richness and cultural closeness between Morocco and Andalusia, with the clear intention of deepening the common bonds between the two cultures, through signs of identity such as music.
Andalusian music is the music created in al-Andalus between 711 and 1492. It is a heritage preserved today in the countries of the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) that bears witness to an original, extremely rich system structured in an extraordinary lyrical modality.
The course will be open to 15 students, who will learn about the history of Andalusian music and the basic concepts of this music, as well as its structural components and modes, rhythm and Andalusian modal theory, as well as practical training through the performance of pieces and improvisation.
As a culmination to this period of learning, the students of the course will offer a performance of some of the musical pieces they have worked on.
In collaboration with the Ministry in charge of Moroccans Living Abroad, 15 scholarships will be offered to participate in this course free of charge. The selected students will not pay any tuition fees, as the total cost of the course is fully covered by the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation and the Moroccan Ministry in charge of Moroccans Residing Abroad.
In order to participate in the selection of candidates and to access the scholarships, it will be indispensable to have a minimum knowledge of solfège, equivalent to the thematic content taught in the first course of solfège according to the Official Regulations of the Conservatories of Music in Spain.
