On 29 and 30 April next, the headquarters of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Rabat will host the international colloquium '.Mariano Fortuny and Orientalism in the mid-19th century'.
This is a joint initiative of the al-Andalus Chair and the Academic Institute of Arts of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Morocco and the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation.
This meeting will bring together leading figures from the academic and artistic spheres of Spain, Morocco, France and Tunisia to analyse the phenomenon of Orientalism in Spanish art in the 19th century, with special attention to the figure of Mariano Fortuny and his close relationship with Morocco. The colloquium will delve into the historical context of Spanish-Moroccan relations of the period, addressing both the imaginary of the journey and the artistic and literary representations derived from this cultural exchange.
Over the course of three thematic sessions, the programme will deal with the influence of the expeditions of Spanish travellers, the role of the army as an artistic patron, and the tension between reality and exoticism in the Orientalist gaze.
