Najat El Hachmi in conversation with Lorenzo Silva

Details

  • Start: 1 September 2014
  • End: 2 September 2014

Moroccan literature is of an extraordinary richness and variety that comes, to a large extent, from the melting pot of languages from which it is enriched. With Najat El Hachmi, Catalan writer of Moroccan origin, winner of the Prix de les Lletres Catalanes Ramón Llull in 2008, the Prix Ulysse and finalist for the Prix Méditerranée étranger 2009 with the novel The last patriarch (Planeta), we have one of the first examples of second-generation immigrants making a place for themselves in our literary scene by writing in Catalan and Spanish.

The strangeness of feeling part of two places and her desire to bring together the two worlds to which she feels she belongs mark the career of Najat El Hachmi. She will be accompanied by Lorenzo Silva, winner of the 2012 Planeta Prize with the novel The meridian mark (Planeta) and to whom he is linked by all kinds of ties with Morocco. As a result of this close relationship, two novels (The name of our people, Carte blanche), a mixture of historical essay and travel book (From the Rif to the Yebala) and a historical-geographical essay (Seven Cities in Africa. Stories from Spanish Morocco).

The conversation will also focus on his first novel, The last patriarchto be discussed during the whole month of September in the book club. Three with books of the Fundación Tres Culturas.
