The book Maimonides: Thoughts for the 21st century It is a 384-page, full-colour, up-to-date outreach work on the great Hispano-Jewish sage, written by the specialist Mario Eduardo Cohen and published by the Scientific and Literary Publishing House of Maimonides University.
The book compiles the results of the latest research that brought to light novel aspects, not only of the scholar's private life (for example, knowledge of the last letter sent to him by his brother before his tragic death), but also a large part of his medical work, recently translated from Arabic into Western languages.
The book contains, as well as hundreds of quotations by the philosopher (including texts published in Spanish for the first time), dozens of moral aphorisms, medical advice that remains relevant today, a chronology, a glossary of terms used, an index of proper names and a comprehensive bibliography.
Three institutions collaborated to make the publication a reality: the University of Cambridge, which provided original handwritten documents by the scholar; the Spanish Ministry of Culture, which supplied the complete bibliography on Maimonides (in all Western languages); and the Maimonides University, which was responsible for the design and production of the book. In addition, renowned researchers, authorities on the subject, rabbis and proofreaders collaborated.
In short, this book fills a vacancy in the field of Latin American literature, offering readers the opportunity to access an up-to-date text on Maimonides' thought. This introductory work covers both the contents of Maimonides' original texts and their bibliographical foundations, which are essential elements for academic study.
