Professor Pilar González will be the protagonist of our June lecture to analyse Christian literature in Arabic as a new way of presenting Christianity in an Islamic milieu.
Christian Arabic literature is at the centre of Arabic literature alongside Islamic literature. When the East became Arabised, it emerged as an heir to the earlier Christian literary heritage, written mainly in Greek, Syriac, Coptic and Ethiopic. It is mainly composed of texts with religious themes, although there are also some texts with secular themes. It was born approximately in the 8th century and reaches the present day touching on a large number of genres: apocryphal literature, hagiographical literature, apocalyptic literature, works of the Greek and Syriac fathers, canons and liturgy, with apologetic, polemical, dogmatic and philosophical works being its most prized achievement.
