In this essay, journalist and writer Stephen Smith, who has worked as an analyst for the United Nations and the International Crisis Group, examines the challenges facing Africa, with the aim of explaining the profound nature of migration. Faced with an ageing and depopulated Europe and an African continent full of restless young people, the author predicts mass migration, the scale and conditions of which will be one of the great challenges of the 21st century, calling into question the idea of the borderless welfare state and the idea of Europe as an impregnable fortress.
