In September, as part of the Ecos de Sefarad programme of activities, we dedicated the Tuesday Film sessions to the Sephardim, descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492.

This cycle opens our eyes to the unique history of the Sephardic Jews, to their traditions and above all to their determination to preserve a culture that has its roots in Sepharad, the medieval Spain of our ancestors.

Tuesday 17 September, 20:30 h.

Sepharad. Adrián Blanco Martínez. Spain, 2018, 11 min.

Sefarad is a short documentary that explores Sephardic culture today, showing the importance of its legacy in contemporary Spanish culture. The director will attend the screening to present his work.

In search of Sepharad. Carina Gurovitz and Paula Castiglioni. Argentina, 2018.

500 years after the expulsion, a law is passed by which Sephardic Jews can gain access to Spanish citizenship. But what does it mean to be Sephardic? What still links them to the Iberian Peninsula?

Sepharad is as much a part of Spanish history as it is of the essence of Spanish America. Anyone with a drop of Spanish blood probably has a Jewish ancestor dating back to ancient Sepharad. Moreover, in this culture we can find clues to today's problems: in the Spain of the three cultures Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together in peace. As the Chief Rabbi Isaac Sacca says: "Even if we are not Jewish, we should all be a little Sephardic".
