At the end of the Middle Ages, when the centuries-old disputes between Christians and Arabs were coming to an end in the Iberian Peninsula, Azahar, an alert and intelligent Arab girl, receives from her uncle Amir -a great adventurer-, the map that shows the location of an ancient treasure. Legend has it that the heart of a mountain, over the centuries, has become a powerful and magical diamond. Azahar sets off in search of the treasure. It is then that she meets Jaime: a Christian boy, all heart and no head, who travels with his godfather Gonzalo "The Great Captain" to negotiate peace with the Nasrids.
Their encounter is complicated when Azahar and Jaime are captured by bandits. On their journey, the children will meet all kinds of colourful characters and will have to overcome numerous setbacks until they reach the very heart of the red fortress: the Alhambra.
