The Fundación Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo, in collaboration with the Federación de Comunidades Judías de España, is organising the international conference dedicated to the figure of Ibn Gabirol, to be held in Málaga on 21 and 22 April. This meeting is part of the activities commemorating the thousandth anniversary of the birth of Solomon Ibn Gabirol (Malaga, c.1021 - Valencia, c. 1070), a Spanish-Jewish Andalusian philosopher, grammarian and poet.
Ibn Gabirol is considered the greatest Neoplatonist of the medieval Arabic philosophical tradition, and also the most important of the medieval Hebrew poets. He was the author of numerous panegyrics and elegies, but he also cultivated satire and self-praise, genres common among Arab poets of the time, but not among Hebrew poets. The originality of his work and his legacy would have a major influence on the development of Western philosophy and on later thinkers such as Thomas Aquinas, Spinoza and Hegel.
International academics, researchers and writers specialising in Jewish and Arabic literature and thought in the medieval context will address the work of Ibn Gabirol. The conference is directed by Dr. María José Cano, professor of Hebrew Studies at the University of Granada (UGR) and a specialist in Gabirol.
Prior to the inauguration of the conference, there will be a wreath laying and a reading of the work of Salomon Ibn Gabirol in front of his statue in his hometown, with the participation of actors Salva Reina and Natalia Verbeke.
All academic activities will be held in the Auditorium of the Museo Picasso Málaga.
