The Fundación Tres Culturas takes part in the Granada Book Fair with the presentation of the book Mohamed Chukri: hunger for writingby Rocío Rojas-Marcos. The author and Elena Arigita, lecturer at the University of Granada, will talk on Thursday 7 October at 18:00 in the Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo.
Mohamed Chukri: hunger for writing (Zut, 2021) is a biography of the Moroccan author, best known for his heart-wrenching Plain breada work with hunger as the unquestionable invisible protagonist, enemy and master.
Chukri was born into a large and poor family in 1935 in Beni Chikar, in the Moroccan region of the Rif, then a province of the Spanish protectorate of Morocco. Two events marked his life: the death of one of his brothers at the hands of his own father and his stay in prison, where he learned to read and write. From the 1960s onwards, Chukri, a fan of Tangier's bars and brothels, began to write. With the publication of Plain bread in 1973, he became an international literary success. Time for errors (1992) y Faces, loves, curses (1996) are the other two titles that make up his autobiographical trilogy.
A friend of important literary figures, he also translated into Arabic poems by Bécquer, the Machado brothers, Vicente Aleixandre and Federico García Lorca, among others. Mohamed Chukri died in Rabat in 2003.
Rocío Rojas-Marcos goes through the most important episodes of a dizzying life: from a tortuous childhood and his time in prison, which marked his entire literary work, to his friendship with writers such as Paul Bowles and Jean Genet. In short, the lights and shadows of one of the most important figures in Arab narrative.
