Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration events

Details

  • Date: 27 January 2020
  • Time:
    22:00 - 23:00

Once again this year, the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation is organising a series of events to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, set by UNESCO every 27 January, the date commemorating the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by Soviet troops in 1945.

The planned activities are intended to refer to the human dignity and worth of all people, as well as their right to live without discrimination and enjoy equal protection under the law, a right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"The Holocaust was the product of an ideology based on biological racism, the main element of which was hatred of Jews [...]. Three generations after the event, preserving the memory of the Holocaust is still about continuing the fight against anti-Semitism that persists in sullifying the memory of the dead in order to attack the Jews of today. The preservation of this memory involves supporting historical research, as well as teaching the history of the Holocaust and other genocides and mass crimes [...]. Together with education officials in all regions of the world, UNESCO carries out this work on a day-to-day basis, through educational research, training activities and its university chairs, as part of its global citizenship education programmes".

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.
