The Tres Culturas Foundation is dedicating the month of September to Sefarad, the name by which Jewish tradition identifies the Iberian Peninsula. As part of this special programme, the foundation is hosting a concert by Al-Mawror, a group based in Granada dedicated to interpreting music of Sephardic tradition from a multicultural perspective, fusing it with other Mediterranean sounds.

This ensemble has spent years recreating Sephardic traditional melodies found in songbooks and recordings by ethnomusicologists and folklorists such as Weich-Shahak, Gloria Levy, Judith Cohen, and Joaquín Díaz, among others.

Its music is built upon three main pillars: Mediterranean melodies, Arabic and Sephardic rhythms, and a voice with flamenco roots.

Live, Al-Mawror takes us from Morocco to Turkey with its music, introducing elements of the diverse cultures that welcomed Sephardic Jews during their Mediterranean diaspora, such as Moroccan Gnawa, Black Sea limping rhythms, Berber Riff dances, the Italian tarantella, Oriental dance, and flamenco.
