The Fundación Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo and the Fundación Machado will develop a programme of activities centred on the figure of Alfonso X 'The Wise' to coincide with the 8th centenary of his birth.
This is a joint initiative of both institutions to examine this legacy from different perspectives (from historical to artistic, from heritage to legal and even the customs of his time that have survived to the present day), taking into account the enormous importance of the monarch.
Issues such as these will be analysed in much greater detail in a series of lectures under the scientific coordination of Antonio ZoidoPresident of the Machado Foundation.
The series will hold a monthly session until June and will resume after the summer break with three more conferences, from September to November, which will deal with such interesting subjects as the birth of Hispanic lyric poetry, the European roots and branches of Alfonso X and the genesis of popular arts.
Third conference:
Tuesday 7 June, 19.00h, `The literary legacy of the Wise King'.by Cristina Moya García, Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Latin American Literature at the University of Seville.
The conference will analyse the valuable literary legacy of Alfonso X and reflect on the place he occupies in the history of our literature. The Wise King played a fundamental role in the European cultural history of the 13th century. Interested in all forms of knowledge, he was concerned to increase, consolidate and expand them. During his reign, he spared no effort to link his name to the prestige conferred by the arts and letters. Thanks to his efforts, Castilian became the language of culture. He occupies a pre-eminent place in the history of Spanish literature for the way he enriched and magnified it. With him we witness the birth of original Castilian prose with the composition of the Estoria de España and the General Estoria, the two historiographical enterprises sponsored by the monarch.
