Compass'. Mathias Enard (Random House Literature, 2016)

"In his flat in Vienna, as the snow begins to fall over the city, the renowned musicologist Franz Ritter recalls all that he has lived and learned while his thoughts fly to Istanbul, Aleppo, Palmyra, Damascus or Teheran, places that have marked his intellectual and sentimental biography.

During this sleepless night, friends and loves, musicians and cursed writers, travellers and adventurous women of uncertain origin and destiny, all touched by the spell of the Middle East, pass through his mind. Of all of them, it is Sarah who occupies his deepest thoughts: for twenty years Franz has been in love with this woman, with whom he has shared an intense relationship marked by travel and oriental culture.

Winner of the prestigious Prix Goncourt, this nocturnal, evocative and musical novel, with generous erudition and bittersweet humour, is a journey and a declaration of love, a search for the Other in us and an outstretching of the hand to build a bridge between East and West, between yesterday and tomorrow, in this present so fragile for both worlds". (Random House Literature).
