Al-Andalus Chair. Conference 'From al-Andalus to Europe: the Jews as transmitters of scientific knowledge'.

Details

  • Start: 31 March 2016
  • End: 1 April 2016

As usual, on the last Thursday of each month we have an appointment with the Al-Andalus Chair, on this occasion given by María Dolores Ferre, professor of Hebrew at the University of Granada. In her talk, she will highlight the work of the Jews as transmitters of knowledge from one culture to another.

Thought and science in the Middle Ages was a shared knowledge between East and West and between individuals of the three monotheistic religions. Language, not religion, was the only real impediment to the circulation of thought, and it was overcome by the adoption of two scientific languages, Arabic and Latin, and by the work of translators.

In this whole movement we find a very active minority: the Jews. As authors and translators they contributed to the flow of knowledge not only to Western Christians, but also to European Jewish communities.

In this conference, we will take the art of medicine as a reference to talk about the journeys of knowledge from the East to the West and also the return journey, with the case of the Jewish convert Juan de Aviñó, author of the work Sevillana medicine.

María Dolores Ferre Cano (Almería, 1960) holds a PhD in Semitic Philology and is Professor of Hebrew at the University of Granada. As Vice-Rector for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies at this university, she has been responsible for the adaptation of undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees to the European Higher Education Area, as well as for the creation of the International Postgraduate School and three doctoral schools.

The conference will be held in the Foundation's specialised library, starting at 19.30 hours, with free admission with prior registration at the following address link.
