The Qur'an is undoubtedly the most important literary document we have for the emergence of Islam, and when dealing with the identity of the first Muslim believers, the information provided by the Qur'an can be indispensable.
What is the environment in which Islam originated? What kind of ideas and thinking permeated the earliest Islamic movement? And not least: who were the people who attached themselves to such ideas? These are some of the most debated questions within the field of research on early Islam and the Qur'an today that will be addressed in this session.
