The April session of the Al-Andalus Chair will focus on the Authorship quotas in Seville Cathedral (1172-2014)through the lecture by Alfonso Jiménez Martín, architect and curator of Seville Cathedral from 1979 to 2015. His talk will take place on 27 April at 7.30 p.m. at the headquarters of the Fundación Tres Culturas.
It is well known that the Cathedral of Seville was begun as an aljama of the Almohad city in 1172 and completed in 1198; the data from this stage are exceptional for their rigour, accuracy and extent, as they even allow us to know the names of three of its 'authors' (Aḥmad b. Bāsu, cAlī al-Gumārī and Abū l-Layṯ al-Siqīllī) and to assume that of another (al-Hajj al-Jayy Ya'is). The great Gothic work began in 1433 and was essentially completed in 1506. It was directed successively by a series of architects whose names and dates are known to us with precision; The list includes the ogival masters Jehan Ysanbert (1433-1434), Pedro García (1434-1435), Charles Gauter de Rouen (1435-1447), Antoni Dalmau (1446-1449), Juan Normán (1449-1478), Francisco Rodríguez de Sevilla (1478-1482), Juan de Hoces (1482-1496), Simón de Colonia (1495-1499) and Alonso Rodríguez (1496-1512). Each one has a share of authorship, that is to say, none, as if we were giving the unlikely list of the 'authors' of a territory or a city.
