Coinciding with the celebration of Sephardic Heritage Month, the Three Cultures Foundation is organising a conference dedicated to analysing the role of Andalusian Jews in one of the richest and most complex periods of medieval Mediterranean history.
The history of Sepharad cannot be understood without the contacts established between the diverse religious communities of al-Andalus and the Mediterranean world as a whole. In that context of the circulation of knowledge, translations, and cultural exchanges, the Jews developed their own forms of intellectual creation that spanned fields as diverse as philosophy, poetry, biblical exegesis, science, and religious reflection.
Under the title ‘Golden Age? The Cultural Production of Andalusian Jews’, Professor David Torollo Sánchez will critically address the concept of the so-called ‘Golden Age’ of Andalusian Jewry, analysing both the extraordinary cultural achievements of this period and the historical circumstances that made its development possible.
The conference also invites reflection on the meaning of Sepharad as a meeting place and on the importance of cultural exchanges between Jews, Muslims and Christians in shaping an intellectual tradition whose influence lasted far beyond the Iberian Peninsula.
The talk, which is taking place as part of the European Days of Jewish Culture, will be given by David Torollo Sánchez, Professor of Jewish Studies at the Complutense University of Madrid and a specialist in the cultural interactions between Jews, Christians and Muslims in the medieval Mediterranean.
