Thursday 24 November, at 7.30 p.m.In our Al-Andalus Chair session, we will have Laila M. Jreis Navarro, graduate in Arabic Philology and doctorate from the University of Granada, and her lecture Straddling two worlds. The Granada-born Ibn al-Khatib and the rebirth of Al Andalus'..

The Grenadian intellectual and politician Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khatib was one of the last of the great Muslim thinkers of Al-Andalus. His immense knowledge, his vast and diverse oeuvre, his lofty rhetorical arts and his drive for renewal shed light on one of the most contentious stages of the dispute over the Straits of Gibraltar in the mid-14th century.

This presentation will unfold his quasi-modern individualism, the marks of innovation that ran through his output in all his disciplines and his participation in an Andalusian Renaissance spirit that died in the breach of the late medieval Islamic West. His attempt to update of Al-Andalus in a modern key with support from the other side takes on a new dimension in the light of our own current situation.
