The existence of dissident religious minorities in Europe increased dramatically after the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. The Iberian experience with these spiritual heterodoxies during the Modern Age was marked by two particularities: the very firm hegemony of the Catholic Church, which managed to extirpate the few outbreaks of Protestantism in the peninsula, and the rather more complex situation posed by two other spiritual (and social) minorities that proved more difficult to absorb: the "new Christians" of Jewish and Muslim origin. This lecture offers a comparative view of the trajectories of two minorities incorporated into Catholicism more by force than by persuasion, and emphasises above all the different outcomes of these two parallel stories of final assimilation.

The lecture, given by Professor James S. Amelang, Honorary Professor of Modern History at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
