Coinciding with the thousandth anniversary of the birth of Solomon ibn Gabirol (Malaga c.1021), the Fundación Tres Culturas, in collaboration with the "La Caixa" Foundation, the Sefarad-Israel Centre, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain, the Ibn Gabirol Association and the Jewish Community of Seville, wishes to pay tribute to the Andalusian poet and philosopher - the most important of his time in the Hebrew language - by organising two conferences as part of the Cátedra al-Andalus programme.
Of Cordovan origin, although born in Malaga, Ibn Gabirol's life was marked by his experiences in different cities, including his native Malaga, as well as Zaragoza, Granada and Valencia, his illness, which he suffered from childhood, and his intellectual activity.
The aim of these lectures is to raise awareness of the figure and work of Ibn Gabirol, also known as Avicebron, whose thought influenced medieval Christian theologians such as Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas and Alexander of Hales. Ibn Gabirol has often been described as the first Spanish-Jewish mystic, one of the most important figures in the history of Spanish philosophy and, without doubt, a universal Jew.
The first session of the cycle, entitled The Jews in the 11th century. The historical context of the life of Solomon ibn Gabirol, will take place on Thursday 30 September 2021 at 19.30. The conference will be given by Ángel Galán SánchezProfessor of Medieval History at the University of Malaga.

The second presentation, entitled Solomon ibn Gabirol: light and shadow, will take place on Thursday 28 October at 19.30 h. and will be given by María José Cano PérezProfessor in the Department of Semitic Studies at the University of Granada.
