The 14th century has often been perceived as a century of economic, political and artistic crisis. However, it was a time of great cultural effervescence in which Castilian court architecture developed its own path through its close contact with al-Andalus. The exchanges of artists and forms across the border, in a round trip, tell us of a cultural formation that did not necessarily perceive the Andalusian as foreign and that was capable of incorporating very diverse references in its own architecture.
Elena Paulino is a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher in the Department of History of Art at the UNED. Her research has focused on the art and architecture of the late Middle Ages and especially on artistic exchanges between Castile and other peninsular and ultra-Pyrenean kingdoms, with special attention to al-Andalus.
