The June session of the Al-Andalus Chair will feature the presentation of the book by Virginia Luque Gallegos, The Legacy of Al-Andalus. The Andalusian and Moorish Heritage in the Maghreb. Afterwards we will have a concert by the Andalusian music group of Emilio Villalba and Sara Marina, researchers and performers of Andalusian music. This activity takes place in the framework of the cycle of activities of Ramadan between Cultures.

About the book

The legacy of Al-Andalus is a journey through the cultural contributions and influences of Al-Andalus and the Moors in the Maghreb. It is a heritage associated with cities, landscapes, streets, bridges, ports and mosques, as well as a legacy of craft traditions, artistic manifestations, knowledge, works and thoughts that continue to evolve.

From the memory of two exiled Andalusian monarchs to the saints, patrons of the main cities, whose tombs and zawiyas continue to attract thousands of devotees, the Andalusians and Moors brought with them techniques and skills, but also literary and musical traditions through the transmission of performers, poets, mystics and composers.

Twelve chapters unravel the connections that link Andalusians and Moors with the Maghreb, as well as the way in which this legacy, forged over the centuries, constitutes a valuable feature of identity. Not only as a tangible heritage of the lands where they settled, but also as a living heritage, symbol and evocation in the Arab-Islamic world.

About the author

Virginia Luque holds a Master's degree in architecture and historical heritage. Historian and researcher on al-Andalus and its connections with the Arab world, she is a member of the network of experts in cultural heritage. Cultural manager, exhibition curator and author of more than a dozen publications on these subjects, she also writes for some Spanish digital media. In her blog, Nur's couchal-Andalus, the Mediterranean and the Maghreb become a permanent field of analysis and exploration provoked by their enclaves, cities, histories and lives. With more than 45,000 visits, the blog has followers in Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Latin America.
