Umar ibn Hafsun remains one of the most prominent historical figures of al-Andalus. His actions (and those of his descendants) in the mountains of Malaga between 880 and 927 raised the possibility of having created a kind of state or dawla as opposed to the legitimate Umayyad of Córdoba.
From the seat of Bobastro, created to ensure the functioning of a dynasty, he developed a frenetic political career based on the search for a legitimacy he lacked. This explains the changes of religious direction in his eventful bibliography: from Sunni Muslim to Christian, from Christian to Shiite Muslim.
We will attempt to trace a biographical sketch of this fascinating character who played such a significant role in the process of the formation of al-Andalus.
The session will be given by Virgilio Martínez Enamorado, who holds a degree and doctorate in Medieval History from the University of Málaga.
