Conference 'Bridging science, diplomacy and cultures for the future of corals'.

Details

  • Date: 22 April 2021
  • Time:
    16:30 - 18:00

The Three Cultures Foundation is collaborating with the Swiss Embassy for Spain and Andorra in an initiative of the Transnational Red Sea Centre -TRSC-, supported by the Swiss Government, to preserve the future of the Red Sea corals. Over the past 30 years, 50% of the world's corals have disappeared due to global warming, pollution and other destructive human activities, and only 10% are expected to survive beyond 2050. However, recent studies have revealed that corals in the Gulf of Aqaba are resistant to global warming due to their particular genetics. Their survival is therefore possible as long as the environmental pressure exerted by human activity in the countries bordering the Red Sea is mitigated.

This initiative involves a number of regional and international researchers who will travel on board the Swiss sailing vessel. Fleur de Passion, logistics platform and flagship of this initiative, to study the situation of coral reefs and to raise awareness of the importance of coral care among the population of coastal countries and worldwide.

The entire project involves four expeditions each summer from this year until 2024, skirting the approximately 4000 km of Red Sea coastline. The first expedition will depart from Seville on 25 April for Aqaba, and will run from July to September on board the Fleur de Passion.

Coinciding with this milestone, the Fundación Tres Culturas joins this interesting initiative by organising at its headquarters the conference Bridging science, diplomacy and cultures for the future of corals. The lecture, given by Prof. Anders MeibomThe event will take place on Thursday, 22 April and will be hosted by two musical interludes performed by the string quartet of the Baremboin-Said Foundation.

The members of this quartet study at the Academy of Orchestral Studies of the Barenboim-Said Andalusian Public Foundation, which aims to improve the technical and artistic skills of the students, developing their abilities to the highest level and preparing them for their incorporation into the professional world. The teaching staff is made up of renowned soloists and performers from the main national and European orchestras: Berlin Philharmonic, Orquesta Nacional de España, Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks or Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, among others.

On this occasion, Andrés Fernández de Mera de la Peña (violin); Claudia Duro Tallafet (violin); Álvaro Castelló Marchena (viola) and Álvaro Lozano Cames (cello) will participate.

The conference will be given in English with simultaneous translation into Spanish. It will also be available on the Foundation's social networks.
