Bruno, an eight-year-old boy, is the son of the newly appointed commandant of a concentration camp. He is unaware of the meaning of expressions like 'final solution' and is not conscious of the horrific cruelties that, in the midst of a world war, the peoples of Europe are experiencing. But everything changes when he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the fence.
