During the month of September, the European Days of Jewish Culture are held in more than 30 countries, with the aim of raising awareness of the cultural and historical heritage of the Jewish people. It is a joint initiative of the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture (AEPJ), the European Council of Jewish Communities, B'nai B'rith Europe and the Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters.
The enhancement of the value of the Jewish legacy in its cultural and historical dimension is one of the objectives that we at Fundación Tres Culturas consider essential. For this reason, we are dedicating a large part of our September programme to Sepharad.
As part of this programme, on Wednesday 28th we will welcome one of the most outstanding Turkish authors, Mario Levi, who will review his career and talk about his works, such as 'Istanbul was a story' (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2014) and 'I've made a cake for you' (2017). In the former, he narrates the vicissitudes of a Jewish family in Istanbul throughout the 20th century, from the years of the Turkish Republic, at the end of the First World War, until the 1980s, after the military coup. As for 'I baked a cake for you', it is the story of a family saga: Lea and Rahel, with their children, grandchildren, husbands, daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, their memories and, above all, the tradition of cooking as the common thread.
During this event, he will speak with Varda Fiszbein, a professor of Hebrew studies and Hebrew and Yiddish languages, as well as a writer and translator.
After the conversation, attendees will be able to taste a Sephardic bread made especially for the occasion by Javier González, an artisan from our collaborating bakery La Esencia.
Invitations available at THIS LINK.
