Film is a driving force for social change in the country's complex transition, and many local filmmakers agree that Moroccans need to see themselves reflected on screen, which is why the new stories deal with subjects that, until recently, were taboo.
The new Maghrebi cinema uses Dariya, the Moroccan colloquial language, or Tamazight or Berber instead of standard Arabic or French. This feature, in addition to the generalisation of video, has led to a 'democratisation' of these stories, and films are timidly breaking the mould even in the Arab world, addressing all kinds of issues in Moroccan society today.
