The Fundación Tres Culturas, in collaboration with the Real Instituto Elcano, is organising a telematic session on the impact that the pandemic caused by COVID-19 is having in the Maghreb and the Middle East, both on a social and health level and on a political and economic scale.
The Spanish ambassadors to the region, Aránzazu Bañón Dávalos (Jordan), Juan José Escobar Stemmann (Iraq) and José María Ferré de la Peña (Lebanon) will take part in the event. They will be accompanied by Haizam Amirah Fernández, Senior Research Fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute and author of the recent paper Coronavirus in Arab countries: passing storm, opportunity for change or regional catastrophe. Together they will analyse the day-to-day reality of the three societies with regard to the virus: how is it really affecting the local population and refugees, what about the economy, what solutions are being taken?
The aim of this roundtable is to analyse these issues, to see what the social consequences, the economic cost and the possible changes in regional dynamics and their repercussions on the northern shore of the Mediterranean will be.
