The Fundación Tres Culturas is organising, in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Institute Turkish Cultural Centre, a free geometry workshop given by the Turkish researcher Serap Ekizler Sönmez.
Over two days, at a rate of three hours each day, the civilisational context of the theme of geometric patterns will be underlined and the way of looking at space, which plays a bridging role in transferring the legacy of the past to the future, will be discussed. The workshops will address the theme of reading the universe from a mathematical perspective, pointing out the solid geometric structure present in the works of our ancestors, while addressing the concept of 'Art of Unity'.
The architectural monuments of the Islamic world that have built civilisations from Central Asia to al-Andalus/Iberia provide data indicating that these geometric patterns belong to a common culture and civilisation in terms of their structure. In Serap Ekizler Sönmez's recent work on kinship relationships between patterns, geometric patterns are addressed in the context of cultural history. The subject of geometric patterns, which lies at the intersection of science and art, can only be understood in the context of the history of science, and thus in the context of the history of thought, if the underlying geometry is properly understood.

Day 1What is the structure of geometric patterns; what is construction with compass and straightedge; what does infinite expansion of patterns mean? Topics such as specular symmetry, glide-reflection symmetry, rotational symmetry and translational symmetries will be explained in concepts such as unit cell, four-fold pattern, six-fold pattern and five-fold pattern when expressing patterns. On the first day, a three-fold square root rectangle pattern will be drawn. Again with six folds, but this time a pattern with a square unit cell will be drawn. The geometry behind the patterns will be examined in depth by comparing it with the first day's pattern. Places where patterns are seen in the Anatolian Seljuqs and their architectural features will be pointed out.
Day 2The first day's designs will be combined, and original approaches developed in the construction of new designs will be presented. The aim is to develop an interesting workshop in a format that is not only fun but also informative, presenting these intricate applications developed over many years, so that by adapting these two-dimensional designs to Archimedean solids, a cuboctahedron is generated.

Although especially recommended for architects, engineers, mathematicians, art historians, those interested in traditional arts, historians and designers, the workshops are open to anyone over the age of 16 who wishes to witness this aspect of Islamic civilisation.
