This session of the international seminar 'Geopolitical Situation and Values in the Mediterranean and the Middle East' dedicated to Iran took the form of a debate among the experts who participated in the seminar.
el. Ángeles Espinosa, correspondent for the newspaper El País The first of six years in the Islamic Republic, she was in charge of posing a series of questions that served as the starting point for a discussion that covered little-known aspects of the country and other regional and international geopolitical issues.
Taking part in the debate were Pedro Villena, Director General of Casa Árabe and ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran between 2011 and 2015; Luciano Zaccara, coordinator and researcher on Gulf Politics at the University of Qatar; Jesús Núñez, co-director of the Institute for Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action; and Alberto Priego, director of the Department of International Relations at Comillas Pontifical University. Throughout the meeting, they addressed issues such as the changes - considered irreversible - that have been implemented in the regime of the ayatollahs and which have made it possible to sign a nuclear treaty with the international community without the use of violence; the validity of this nuclear agreement in the Trump era; relations with the Golf monarchies and, especially, with Saudi Arabia - relations between the two countries have in many cases taken the form of a confrontation by interposition, as in Syria and Yemen -; and the impact on the region of the drop in oil prices.
This international meeting - part of the 4th ALQANTARA Forum, which took place between 30 November and 1 December 2016 - was organised by the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation, with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Moroccans Living Abroad and Migration Affairs and the collaboration of Casa Árabe and the Spanish Network of the Anna Lindh Foundation.
