3rd Conference of the Cycle 'Great Capitals of the Medieval Islamic World: Past and Present': MURCIA

The Fundación Tres Culturas and Casa Árabe, with the collaboration of the Sísifo research group of the Archaeology Department of the University of Cordoba, are organising this series of conferences as part of the 1300th anniversary of Cordoba's status as the capital of Al-Andalus, in which a selection of the most important cities in the history of Islam, which at some point were the capital of an important medieval kingdom or empire, will be analysed.

All of them will be presented by world specialists in their study, who will address both the history of the capital in question (its period of greatest heyday and urban expansion, offering an informative visual contribution that conveniently expresses its evolution and development) and a critical and current vision focused on the study and conservation of the vestiges of the cities that have survived to the present day (abandonment, despoilment, wars, real estate pressure, etc.).

On this occasion the Dr. Julio Navarro Palazón of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Escuela de Estudios Árabes will speak about the city of MurciaThe event will take place on 21 June at 19:30h at the headquarters of the Fundación Tres Culturas.

Prof. Dr. Julio Navarro Palazón

Dr. Navarro Palazón holds a degree in Philosophy and Arts from the University of Murcia and a PhD in Ancient History and Archaeology from the same University. He was Honorary Professor of Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Murcia between 1980-1983. He was also an archaeologist contracted by the Ministry of Culture from 1982 to 1983. He has been a tenured scientist at the School of Arab Studies in Granada (CSIC) since 27-07-2001 and Vice-Director of the same since 2013.

As far as his scientific management is concerned, he was director of the Ibn Arabi Centre for Arab and Archaeological Studies of the City Council of Murcia from 1987 to 2001. Main researcher of the Andalusian Research Group (HUM 757): Medieval Islam. History, archaeology and conservation of historical heritage, 2004-2007 and principal investigator of the Andalusian Research Group (HUM 104): Laboratorio de Arqueología y Arquitectura de la ciudad (LAAC), 2008. He has also published more than 80 books.
