In this exhibition project, Clara Carvajal investigates the visual memory of Lebanon through the archives of three important photography collections from the country, such as the Arab Image Foundation, the archives of the AN-NAHAR newspaper and those of the photographer Emile Boulos Divers.
Photographic archives that Clara Carvajal has explored in depth in order to analyse the social response to Lebanon's military and historical conflicts from the time the country achieved independence from the French mandate in the 1940s until the outbreak of the civil war in 1975.
As exhibition curator Zara Fernández de Moya explains, the artist questions the image's capacity for transformation, which, without ceasing to be true to itself, is updated in each new medium and, thanks to this journey, is enhanced and enhances our gaze.
Clara Carvajal, a Spanish artist trained as a sculptor, works with cultural processes involving Mediterranean and Middle Eastern languages. Digital technology and geometric graphic scripts are the subject of her work. In this exhibition project, she produces, from images chosen by herself, a collection of woodcuts with which she seeks to delve deeper into her iconography: the happy little girl, the sensual couple in love walking by the sea, the male body as a divine icon, the proud father with his offspring, the saviour, the caregiver, the amused muse…
The exhibition will open on the 3rd with the creator Clara Carvajal and the curator, Zara Fernández, in attendance.
This exhibition will open to the public on the 3rd of March at 13:00. Afterwards, it can be visited at the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation until the 9th of April, from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 to 20:00 and on Fridays from 8:30 to 16:00.
