On Monday 16 December, the conference series Mediterranean Sound: Music from the Maghreb and the Middle East'. travelled to Alicante with a new event dedicated to delving into the sound heritage of the Arab Mediterranean. The aim was to put a musical legacy that is not very well known in the West at the centre of debate and cultural dissemination.
In this sessionorganised by Casa Mediterraneo in collaboration with the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation- addressed the richness and complexity of classical Arabic music, a historical tradition with roots in the Middle Ages.
Through an illustrated lecture format, with sample musical passages, its theoretical foundations, historical evolution and influence beyond the Arab world were explored.
Important milestones were reviewed, such as the contributions of classical theorists such as Al-Kindi and Al-Farabi, the musical manifestations in the period of Al-Andalus, the transformation and renewal of the genre in Egypt after the Arab Music Congress of 1932, as well as its influence on Western music.
The conference was given by José Carlos Cabrera Medina -arabist and director of the intercultural radio magazine 'Ruta Mediterránea' on Radio Andalucía Información-, who guided the audience through this sonorous and cultural journey.
