AL-ANDALUS CHAIR at the Palace of the Marquises of La Algaba

The al-Andalus Chair of the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation will devote its March session to analysing the role of Islam and Islamic Spain in the transmission of Hellenistic knowledge to Europe and the West.

The troubled journey of ancient Greek knowledge through Islam and its entry into the West via al-Andalus and Christian Spain is, to a greater degree than we imagine, one of the civilisational lines that have nourished our culture and, undoubtedly, one of those little-known stories that unite us.

Exploring it through texts, cities, roads and people, is the purpose of this meeting with the Spanish Hellenist and writer Pedro Olallawhose multifaceted work from Athens reflects on the scope of all things Greek in universal culture.

The conference, under the title From Greece to Toledo: The Journey of Greek Culture through Islamwill take place on wednesday 13 march at 19.00 h. in the Palace of the Marquises of La Algaba.

Capacity limited to one hundred people. Free admission until seating capacity is reached. 

About the rapporteur:

Pedro Olalla (Asturias, Spain, 1966) is a writer, Hellenist, teacher, translator and filmmaker, based in Athens since 1994. His numerous literary and audio-visual works explore and promote Greek and humanist culture, combining literary, plastic and scientific elements, using a markedly personal language. For his work as a whole and for his work in the promotion of Greek culture, he has received, among other important awards, the titles of Ambassador of Hellenism (Greek State), Knight of the Order of Civil Merit (Spanish State) and Associate Member of the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University.
