In this meeting, co-organised with Centro Sefarad-Israel and which forms part of the cycle 'Sepharad in Three Cultures', we will have the first-hand testimonies of two women who, from two different perspectives, will talk about the importance of women in the conservation of such an important heritage as Ladino (the language used by the Sephardim, also known as Judeo-Spanish) and Haketia (the dialect of the Jews of northern Morocco and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla).
Esther Bendahan, director of culture at the Centro Sefarad Israel and writer, will talk about this oral tradition as an inherited heritage. She will talk about Sepharad in general and her experiences, the exile and Ladino. With regard to Haketya, she will tell us about its aspect as a "secret" language, sometimes used in family environments as a superimposition of Spanish. Esther is the author of the following titles, among others: Tetouan, A Sea of Stories: The Sephardic Jews, Sepharad is also Europe or Now Sepharad.
Alicia Sisso, an expert in Haketía who will accompany us from New York, will talk to us about this language as an element in the search for identity. A long-time researcher of this language and translator of some chapters of Don Quixote into Haketía, she will explain what it is, show us how it is spoken and provide us with sources and documents where we can research and learn more about it. We recommend that you consult her magnificent blog: http://www.vocesdehaketia.com/.
