Cultural diversity: common heritage of mankind

UNESCO in its Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity states that culture is to be regarded as the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group, and that it encompasses, in addition to art and literature, ways of life, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs.

Affirms that respect for the diversity of cultures, tolerance, dialogue and cooperation, in a climate of mutual trust and understanding, are among the best guarantors of international peace and security, aspiring to greater solidarity based on the recognition of cultural diversity, awareness of the unity of humankind and the development of cultural exchanges.

Assuming these principles, the Fundación Tres Culturas proposes a month of May dedicated to Cultural Diversity, where Mediterranean music and films made in different countries of the world come together.

Lavapiés Stories

Ramón Luque, Spain, 2015, 91min.

Lavapiés Stories is a feature-length fiction film about the lives of ordinary people in a moment ofCartel HL. 2jpgof their lives. With the Madrid neighbourhood of Lavapiés as a backdrop, the social background is unavoidable. It is a neighbourhood of contrasting cultures and classes, with a close coexistence in which conflicts, violent and ethical, sometimes occur, but sometimes also favouring dialogue and solidarity. Several stories revolve around Ernesto, a teacher at a school in the neighbourhood, when he returns to the school after a year's sabbatical. In reality, it was a "covert expulsion" after he punched the father of a pupil who mistreated his whole family. Now he returns to the school, where he will encounter new problems caused by cutbacks and also by the vicissitudes of pupils of all nationalities, many of them with serious family situations caused by lack of resources. He is also forced to experience first-hand the problems of the immigrant population through his maid, his best friend's girlfriend, the beggar who sleeps on his doorstep, and all kinds of situations that arise as a neighbour in Lavapiés.
