The Three Cultures Foundation, in collaboration with Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo and the Al Fanar Foundation, organises the presentation of the comic Yoghurt with jam, or how my mother became Lebanese, by the renowned artist Lena Merhej.
Lena Merhej is the founder of the first comic magazine in the Arab world., Samandal, which is published in Lebanon. It is a key element of the Arabic graphic novel, a medium of artistic and literary expression that has gained a relevant place in contemporary Arab culture and is characterised, furthermore, by a significant female presence, superior to many other artistic branches and perhaps superior to what is happening in Europe.
Merhej presents us with Yogurt with jam, a beautiful story about his mother, a German from Hanover, in which he portrays the “peaceful coexistence of contradictions” that was his family and—perhaps not so peacefully—his country. An approach to the Arab world through the eyes of a woman from old Europe, demonstrating that the East is not so far away: it too has memory, nostalgia, and open wounds. (Alfonso Zapico, recommendation) Babelia, El País)
Yoghurt with jam, translated by Mónica Carrión, is the first comic translated directly from Arabic. The illustrator and Fine Arts professor Inma Otero will act as presenter.
Furthermore, Lena Merhej will be at Aljarafe School in the morning for a meeting with 3rd and 4th year ESO students.
Translation from Arabic into Spanish will be provided.
